Ametrine is a naturally occurring variety of quartz that combines the purple of amethyst with the yellow-orange of citrine in a single crystal. Its name is a portmanteau of amethyst and citrine. The gemstone is primarily sourced from the Anahí mine in southeastern Bolivia, which remains the world’s only commercial source. Deposits also exist in Brazil and India, but they are far less significant. The distinct coloration arises from iron impurities in different oxidation states, with the yellow segments oxidized by heat while the purple amethyst segments remain unoxidized.
